OUT OF SPACE

“It was like…like nothing. We have no referents. No analogies. It possessed immense depth, but was not a landscape. Those different shades, as I said, more and more distant and dark, until your eyes swam. Motion – none, really. It floated and stood still. It changed, as if it breathed, yet remained the same; perhaps the most important thing was its enormity. As if beyond this cruel black eternity there existed another eternity, another infinity, so concentrated and mighty, so bright, that if you closed your eyes you would no longer believe in it.”

From ‘Return From The Stars by Stanislaw Lem (1966)

OUT OF SPACE is an exhibition of recent works by British artist Alice Browne which explore an unbounded curiosity for discovery and transition. Playing with the idea of outer space as well as what can be made ‘out of space’, Browne quests for connection between symbolic and tangible realms, imagination and experience.

Browne is interested in what separates one space or body from another. She asks how we conceptualise the structure of the world with all its insides and outsides (seen and unseen) and how do we move through these spaces?

Her painted works are created slowly, emerging through many layers of colour in which existing experiences mingle with new ones. Influences of literature, architecture, natural forms, rock climbing, discarded objects and theatrical effects meet with microscopic entanglement, deep earth chasms, un-namable form, symbolic hope and the fallibility of human experience.

The majority of the works in the exhibition are from a series entitled ‘Stick’. Browne says: “these works on paper are core part of my practice, where ideas and processes are broken down and re-grown. This evolution is cyclical: as a tree grows, its branches may fall and turn into sticks. These sticks may be used by idle hands to build something new. All of the works in this ‘Stick’ series are about discovery and transition, created intuitively and without fear. From one space, there are endless possibilities. With curiosity and playful intention, I hope to continue to push the limits of my imagination in an ever growing and expanding realm.”

Browne will be in residence at the gallery throughout March 2026, making drawings and paintings in response to the city and beyond.
