Otherwise we R lost marks the first solo exhibition by BOLIN, bringing together key works from his ongoing “Heart” series. Throughout the exhibition, the recurring heart motif functions not as a symbol of romance, but as a subtle visual device through which intimacy, companionship, emotional distance, and vulnerability are examined.
Working with traditional Chinese ink on paper, BOLIN’s practice is grounded in a historical medium while remaining firmly situated in the present. His compositions are restrained and quiet, yet charged with emotional tension. The repetition of simple forms allows small shifts in tone, spacing, and gesture to surface, reflecting the fragile balance between closeness and separation in human relationships.
Rather than offering narrative conclusions, the exhibition invites viewers to slow down and remain with these moments of ambiguity. Otherwise we R lost proposes a space for reflection—one that asks how we connect, hesitate, and stay present with one another in an increasingly fragmented contemporary world.
Otherwise we R lost は、アーティスト BOLIN による初個展であり、これまでの制作の軌跡と現在地を示す展覧会である。本展では、BOLIN が継続的に制作してきた「Heart（心）」シリーズを中心に構成される。反復されるハートのモチーフは、愛やロマンティシズムの象徴としてではなく、親密さ、寄り添い、距離、感情の揺らぎといった、人と人との関係性に内在する微細な状態を映し出す装置として用いられている。中国伝統の水墨紙本を媒体としながらも、その表現は極めて現代的であり、静けさの中に確かな緊張感を孕んでいる。本展は、断片化が進む現代社会において、私たちが他者とどのように向き合い、つながり続けるのかを静かに問いかける。
BOLIN
BOLIN is an artist working primarily with traditional Chinese ink on paper. His practice is shaped by an early exposure to both Western visual culture and Eastern philosophy, resulting in a language that bridges restraint and emotion, tradition and contemporaneity.
He graduated in 2013 from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) with a major in Information Design. Following his studies, BOLIN worked across advertising, graphic design, and commercial illustration. In 2016, he shifted his focus toward an independent artistic practice, and in 2021 began concentrating on ink painting as his primary medium.
BOLIN’s works, shared widely through social media, have gained international attention and have been recognized by artists, musicians, and cultural platforms including the late Virgil Abloh, YE, Daniel Arsham, Pusha T, as well as HIGHSNOBIETY, COMPLEX, and HYPEBEAST. Virgil Abloh notably supported BOLIN’s work and commissioned him to create commercial illustrations for Off-White™, reflecting the artist’s ability to move fluidly between artistic and commercial contexts.
BOLIN は中国出身のアーティスト。中国伝統の水墨紙本を主な制作媒体とし、西洋の視覚文化と東洋哲学の双方から影響を受けた独自の表現を展開している。2013 年に中央美術学院（CAFA）情報デザイン学科を卒業後、広告デザイン、グラフィックデザイン、商業イラストレーションの分野で活動。2016 年よりアーティストとしての活動を本格化し、2021 年から水墨による制作を開始した。SNS を通じて発表された作品は国内外で注目を集め、故 Virgil Abloh をはじめ、YE、Daniel Arsham、Pusha T などのアーティストや、HIGHSNOBIETY、COMPLEX、HYPEBEAST といったカルチャープラットフォームからも紹介されている。Virgil Abloh からは Off-White™ のための商業イラストレーション制作を依頼された。
