Oct 1, 2024 - Nov 1, 2024

This exhibition, “Fluid Realities: Imagining the Unseen,” brings together the evocative works of Julie Navarro, Kohei Akiba, and Alice Browne. Through their explorations on paper, these artiets weave a rich tapestry of existential inquiry, vibrant expression, and the interplay between the natural and the imagined worlds.

Julie Navarro

Julie Navarro delves into the transformative power of water in her delicate yet potent creations.Utilizing rainwater from the garden at La Petite Escalère, she manipulates black ink on rice paper, resulting in silky waves of navy blue and rosewood. These forms, which she describes as primitive, sexual, and ghostly, reflect beams of light within the material’s folds. Water, as an existential matrix, penetrates and reshapes, bringing forth new dimensions of perception and emotion.

Kohei Akiba

Kohei Akiba, a Japanese artist based in Tokyo, captivates with his vibrant and dynamically charged drawings. Akiba’s works span a variety of subjects, from bustling cityscapes to introspective self-portraits and fantastical animals. His psychedelic style, characterized by dramatic movement and vivid color, emphasizes the joyous and experimental nature of his creative process. Each piece is a testament to Akiba’s enthusiasm and is desire to engage with art for its own sake, creating multi-dimensional experiences that pulse with life and energy.

Alice Browne

Alice Browne navigates the intersection of nature, technology, and fantasy through her richly layered paintings and drawings. Her ‘sci-fi still life’ compositions play with gravity and space, bringing colorful objects and forms into a state of perpetual motion and transformation. Drawing from diverse inspirations such as prehistoric symbols, David Lynch’s ‘Owl Cave’ from Twin Peaks, and contemporary urban landscapes, Browne’s works challenge the boundaries between reality and imagination. Her meticulous process, often spanning weeks or months, results in pieces that capture the fluidity of existence and the ongoing redefinition of history and perception.
Together, these 22 paper works invite viewers to immerse themselves in a journey through primitive forms, vibrant realities, and fantastical landscapes. “Fluid Realities: Imagining the Unseen” celebrates the unique visions of Navarro, Akiba, and Browne, offering a profound exploration of the human experience and the boundless potential of artistic expression.
